ISIS ambush kills 19 regime forces in Sweida desert

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Islamic State militants have killed 10 Syrian regime troops in an ambush in its last desert strongholds in southern Syria, local activists said Thursday.

The ambush late Wednesday in the southern province of Sweida was the second in two weeks since 12 forces had been killed on September 11 in the volcanic plateau of Tulul Al Safa, which lies some 100 kilometres southeast of Damascus.

The death toll included 4 officers and 12 soldiers.

More than 125,000 pro-regime forces have been killed in seven years of brutal war, according to local monitoring groups.

Regime forces have been fighting Daesh in Sweida since extremists carried out a wave of attacks in the mainly Druze province on July 25, killing 250 people according to the observatory.

ISIS has lost nearly all of the great swathes of territory straddling Iraq and Syria, which it seized in 2014, but retains a presence in the vast Badiya desert that lies between Damascus and the Iraqi border, and holds a pocket in the Euphrates Valley in the east. (Zaman Al Wasl, Agencies)
