Opposition areas rally against Assad regime, Russia

(Zaman Al Wasl)- For the fifth consecutive Friday, thousands of Syrians came out to the streets of rebel-held areas to rally against the regime and key ally Russia.

The demonstration took place in Idlib province and the northern countryside of Aleppo.

Demonstrators held up the three-star flag of the Syrian revolution and placards recalling the first days of the Syrian revolution in 2011, saying their goal is the toppling of the Assad regime and stopping Russian aggression.

They also condemned the acts of Tahrir al-Sham jihadist group that controls the city of Idlib.

Idlib, the densely populated province, is the rebels' only remaining major stronghold in Syria.

Moscow and Ankara reached a deal in September to create a buffer zone around the opposition stronghold of Idlib that would be free of both militants and heavy arms.

On Sept. 17, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed to set up a demilitarized zone about 15 to 20 kilometers wide ringing around Idlib.

All factions in the planned buffer zone must hand over their heavy weapons by Oct. 10, and radical groups must withdraw by Oct. 15, according to the agreement.
