UNHCR aid, tents reach refugee camps in northern eastern Syria

(Zaman Al Wasl)- UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has begun replacing 500 tents and distributing food items to Syrian refugees in northeastern Syria

The move followed a week of fresh floods and severe storms.

The urgent tent supply was for the camp of Abo Khashab.

Sajjad Malik, the UNHCR Country Representative in Syria said last week via his official Twitter account that storms had damaged a number of IDP camps in northeastern Syria, particularly serious is the situation in Abo Khashab camp.

The powerful winter storms have swept the Syrian refugees camps across the Turkish and the Iraqi border, worsening conditions for those who have fled the eight-year-old war.

The torrential rain and strong winds have lashed most displaced areas in eastern provinces of Deir Ezzor and Hasaka and in northern Idlib province and parts of Hama province.

The rain, which accompanied with powerful thunderstorms, has turned most of the makeshift camps into a lake of mud.

Abo Hussein, a Syrian displaced, said about 650 families in Maarret al-Nu’man camps in the eastern countryside of Hama province have been living from bad living conditions, urging the aid and relief agencies to lessen their suffering.

As the Damascus regime and key allies say the war is over, thousands of Syrian refugees who are scattered among the borders and in makeshift camps still feel they are neglected and abandoned.

On Friday, floods killed seven Syrians were crossing the Turkish border into Hatay province on Thursday, Anadolu agency reported.

About 75,000 displaced in the Rukban camp at the Syrian-Jordanian border are under severe siege by Jordan and the Assad regime. A dust storm ravished their tents on Wednesday.

Since the Syrian revolution erupted in 2011, more than 360,000 people have been killed, and more than 6 million people have been displaced.
