Egypt deports German citizen over terror suspicions

Egyptian authorities say they have deported a German citizen of Egyptian origin who had been detained last month in Luxor airport carrying maps and a compass, raising suspicions he was plotting terrorism.

Cairo airport officials said Friday that 18-year-old Isa El Sabbagh, from Giessen, was repatriated on a flight to Frankfurt in coordination with the German Embassy after being questioned by police.

Security officials say interrogations revealed Isa believed in the extremist ideology of Daesh (ISIS) and intended to join the group in restive northern Sinai, and is now banned from returning to Egypt. They say he'd been in contact with several Daesh members.

Another detained dual citizen, 23-year-old Goettingen resident Mahmoud Abdel Aziz, is still in custody.

Officials spoke anonymously as they weren't authorized to brief reporters.
