Refugee mother sets herself on fire protesting poverty- Rukban Camp

(Zaman Al Wasl)- A Syrian refugee woman set herself on fire last week in the Rukban refugee camp, protesting brutal hunger and neglect in the abandoned camp at the Jordanian border.

Activists said the mother of three was already at risk of dying of hunger along with her family.

The burning resulted in severe injuries to her and her baby child, what pushed the Jordanian border guards to transfer them to a hospital.

Rukban, located close to the Tanf U.S. military base in the desert near where the borders of Syria, Jordan and Iraq converge, is home to more than 55,000 people.

Death is chasing us, refugees say.

Two week ago, Sumaya Salem, 3-year-old, was frozen to death.

Another child, one-week-old, died after suffering from jaundice disease and the indifference from the medical point of her condition, and the refrain from moving her to Jordan despite the ongoing attempts of her family.

Shortages of food and medicine at the camp have caused at least a dozen deaths in recent weeks; the United Nations described conditions there as “concerning” and said thousands of lives were at risk.

Many refugees and internally displaced people fear to return home because of poor living conditions, conscription into the military or worry over reprisals.

More than half a million people have died in the Syrian conflict since it began in 2011, and half the pre-war population have fled their homes, including more than 5 million who have gone abroad.
