SDF prevents 400 tribal figures from participation in anti-Turkey conference in regime areas

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Friday blocked the crossing of 400 tribal figures from northeastern Syria to regime-held Hama province to participate in a conference denouncing Turkish intervention in Syria, local sources said.

The tribal figures loyal to Bashar al-Assad said they reject Turkish intervention in northern Syria under any pretext, especially "fighting the Kurds brothers".

Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey is expecting a "safe zone" to be set up in Syria along the Turkish border within a few months, otherwise, it will establish the buffer alone.

Erdogan previously said he and US President Donald Trump had discussed setting up a 32km security zone in Syria along the border, after Trump's decision to withdraw all 2,000 US troops from Syria. The technical aspects of the zone were still being discussed, according to Al Jazeera.

Turkey is seeking the zone to contain the US-allied fighters of the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), which the US has armed and trained to fight against ISIS (Daesh).

The YPG is seen as an effective ground force by the US in the fight against ISIS, but Turkey says it is linked to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which Ankara and Washington list as a terrorist group.
