Syrian women activists in Germany form feminist group

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrian women activists formed an independent body called The Syrian Feminist Movement in Germany.

The Syrian Women's Political Movement was founded in Paris in October 2017 and led to immediate election of a general secretariat of seven women.

The first general conference was held in Frankfurt a year after the establishment and was attended by 35 women and one male member within the movement.

The movement includes politicians who fight for freedom, justice and dignity and against tyranny for every Syrian citizen and defended the rights of women in their country.

The movement defined itself as a group of Syrian women who are working to build a modern, democratic and pluralistic Syria, based on the principles of equal citizenship without discrimination among its citizens whatever their sex, race, religion and   region etc..

A source in the General Secretariat of the movement who preferred not to mention her name, told Zaman al-Wasl that the foundation of the movement comes under the issue of marginalizing women, especially in the decision-making positions.

According to the same source, the feminist movement aim to be with clearly defined objectives and specific goals.

She said that their movement is not just a civil society organization which only cares about humanitarian and feminist aspects but it outline political attitudes, especially as all its members are Syrians.

It’s noteworthy that, there are male members among the movement, who support the   women issue and the need for their presence.

The movement's final statement stressed the need to give priority to save the civilians from all acts of violence, to release detainees and to reveal the fate of those who disappeared forcibly.
Also, the movement urges lifting the siege on the besieged areas and to ensure a dignified return of displaced persons and refugees to their homes.

The source pointed out that the feminist movement rejected the policies of non-refoulement against refugees, before guaranteeing a safe and neutral environment and pressure international bodies and governments to improve the basic services and the right to education.

The return of refugees to their original areas of residence will occur after guaranteeing their full political rights, personal safety, personal freedoms and ensuring that they will not later be subject to retaliation and detention.

According to the source, the movement committed itself to a fundamental change in the structure of the authoritarian regime to a pluralistic democratic state.

It urges the peaceful political solution in Syria, and the need to raise the presence of women to at least 30% in all decision-making positions.
