Syrian rebels have taken the Gharz central prison in Daraa in southern Syria, freeing about 300 to 400 detainees.
Al-Omari brigades, Islamist rebel group, also say they have taken the vehicle training grounds to the south of the prison and a “secret facility”.
Syria activists have circulated many videos show the storming operation of the powerful stronghold in the province which considered the cradle of Syrian revolution.
The operation was in great secrecy, Abu Abdullah al-Shami, media activist told Zaman Alwasl.
The strategic location of the 7-storey prison has helped Assad’s forces in monitoring the movements of rebels, Journalist Mohamed al-Hammadi, based in Daraa, said.
Al-Hammadi reported to Zaman Alwasl that the prison fall will reinforce the siege on Assad’s headquarters in the city center.
Daraa is where Syria’s uprising started three years ago with anti-government protests that later spread throughout the country. The conflict turned into a civil war that has killed more than 146,000 people. with EA
