Latakia: rebels kill regime troops in surprise attack

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrian rebels launched a surprise attack on an army barrack in the coastal Latakia province, killing and wounding dozen, sources told Zaman al-Wasl Sunday.

The attack in the mountainous region of Jabal al-Turkman followed the death of 21 regime troops in Hama province by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, near the planned buffer zone around rebel-held territory in neighboring Idlib.

The Alawites-dominated areas in Latakia are still the main manpower supply for Bashar al-Assad's regime.

More than 130,000 pro-regime forces have been killed in seven years of brutal war, according to local monitoring groups.

More than 560,000 people have been killed and millions displaced since the conflict erupted with the brutal repression of anti-regime protests in 2011.
