Syrian regime frees 50 detainees held in Hama Prison

(Zaman Al Wasl)-  Syrian regime on Wednesday has freed 50 detainees were held in the Hama Central Prison after weeks of tension and rebellion by political inmates, source told Zaman al-Wasl.

The release followed an official visit by senior security officers in the Police and and Criminal and Political security to the prison, 210 km (130 miles) northwest of Damascus.

Among the freed batch were prisoners who were sentenced to death by the Field Court, according to the source.

Earlier this week, the Syrian security forces have threntend to storm Hama prison if the detainees keep their rebellion over death sentences for fellow inmates.

The Syrian police backed by the political Security Division seek to to transfer 23 political detainees to the notorious Saydnaya prison where they might be executed.

Last November, the detainees in all sections and wings of Hama prison decided to participate in a hunger strike in order to push the regime to suspend the execution of death sentences by the Combat-Terrorism Court.

In May 2016, the prisoners seized the prison and took hostages from guards after five inmates were to be taken to Saydnaya prison for the execution of death sentences passed by an extra-judicial military tribunal.

But a deal was brokered with the regime and ended the mutiny.

Then, the regime agreed to most of the detainees’ demands to release those political detainees held without charges.

Since the Syrian revolution erupted in 2011, more than 200,000 people have been detained, and more than 67,000 people have been forcibly disappeared.
