Istanbul: Syrian refugee girl wins public speaking competition

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Sham Ali Safar, a 17-year-old Syrian refugee gril, has won the first place in the English Speech competition in Istanbul last week.

Safar won a competition of 18 Turkish students who represent Istanbul's most respected schools.

Sham participated in a speech entitled “Have you ever imagined what it means to be a refugee?” Such a subject deals with the concerns of Syrian refugees and their suffering around the world.

Safar told Zaman al-Wasl that she participated in the competition, which was held in the Galatasaray Private School in Istanbul.

Safar revealed that her English teacher had told her about the competition and invited her to participate in it, offering her help, especially since her school had not participated in the competition for a long time and had never won any prize.

According to Safar, the refugee is not in need for food, drink or compassion, but he needs to be understood and accepted by the host communities and to be treated as a human being.

Sham expressed her desire to complete her studies and to enter the School of Psychiatry after obtaining the high school diploma.
