Syrian activist collects photos of 9000 people killed by Assad

(Zaman Al Wasl)- The Syrian designer Tamer Turkmani continues his 4-year-old project in documenting the victims of the Syrian revolution by their names and pictures.

Turkmani has focused on the photos of the unidentified victims, because they are not mere figures and they did not had the necessary attention from human rights organizations and documentation institutions, he said.

Turkmani told Zaman al-Wasl that since the beginning of his work in documenting the martyrs of the Syrian revolution, he didn’t met anyone from their relatives (some pictures are from 2011).

Hence, he began to documenting these images because the coordination pages increased and the news on the victims is become unclear.

Turkmani believe that it is necessary to highlight this category of martyrs that media didn’t care about, and at the same time to help parents to know whether their children are alive or dead.

However, Tamer is aware that since 2011, there are about 200,000 people with uncertain fate
till today.

Focusing on documentation will push the families and relatives of the missing to look for them after calm in Syria, especially after the closure of most of the coordinates that were documenting the martyrs on a daily basis, according to Turkmani.

He added that the forcibly disappeared people are forgotten in the Syrian society. He insist that they’re normal people “he is a person like me and you and millions of people, but the difference is that he fell into the hands of criminals, who didn’t know mercy and killed him without knowing anything about him”.

Turkmani expressed that there are pictures of more than 20 thousand victims, but their identities and names are unknown.

Turkmani has documented about 9,000 images of anonymous people out of the 20,000 so far. He expected to finish his project by completing by the eighth anniversary of the Syrian revolution.

Tamer pointed out that his work was very complicated and difficult. His documentation was based on a distinguishing mark for every martyr whether he executed, tortured, burned or humiliated etc.
He revealed that most of the photos he documented were about the executed victims in a brutal manner by the regime’s Shabbiha.

It’s noteworthy that Shabbiha (Assad Thugs) attacked everyone who belongs or support the revolution. Most of them were young people, and many martyrs were victims of the Russian and regime warplanes.

On the difficulties and obstacles encountered at his documentation project, Tamer stressed that the most difficult is to publish the distorted images.

He added that the psychological pain he felt during his documentation is comparable to the documentation of one million identified martyrs.
He concluded that there is a big surprise, within his project in documenting and archiving the Syrian revolution, will be announced after the archiving and arranging.

Since the Syrian revolution erupted in 2011, more than 560,000 people have been killed, and more than 6 million people have been displaced.

Turkmani provided Zaman Al Wasl with 1,000 pictures for anonymous victims.
