Syrian opposition activists and a war monitoring group say rebels have launched an offensive in the mountains of the coastal Latakia province, overrunning a series of Syrian army positions.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says clashes are underway in several locations in the Turkman Mountains. It says the fighting killed 35 people on both sides in the opening hours. There was no immediate regime comment, according to AP.
Several opposition activists also reported Tuesday's operation.
Also, rebels of Hama thwarted on Monday an attack by regime forces and allied militias, killing 30 troops in the northwestern province, commander told Zaman al-Wasl.
Abu Yasser al-Hamwi, senior rebel commander, said the Syrian opposition had foiled new offensive on the battlefronts of Qassabiya, Tel Melh and Kafr Houd. Dozens of regime militants were killed and wounded, he added.
Idlib and parts of Hama and Latakia have come under increasing fire by the regime and its ally Russia since late April, despite a months-old international truce deal.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights,(SNHR), which monitors casualties and briefs various UN agencies, said at least 544 civilians had been killed and 2,117 people had been injured in the hundreds of attacks carried out by Russian jets and the regime army include 130 children. .
The United Nations says 25 health facilities in the region have been hit.
