Russian, Syrian strikes kill 11 in rebel area: Observatory

Syrian rescuers and activists say 11 civilians, including two families of four, have been killed in regime and Russian airstrikes inside Syria's last rebel stronghold.

First responders known as White Helmets said airstrikes in Kfarya village Saturday killed a mother, her baby and another man, leaving 11 injured, including one of their volunteers.

The rescuers and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said other airstrikes in the town of Khan Sheikhoun hit a farm, killing two families- four children and four parents. The Observatory said Russian aircraft were suspected of launching the strike.

Moscow is backing the Syrian regime in a stalled offensive against the northwestern Syria rebel enclave, now in its 11th week.

Russia said it foiled an attack on its coastal military base Friday.

More than 600 civilians have been killed in northwest Syria since the end of April, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and activists say.

Also, the spike in violence has caused 330,000 people to flee their homes since May 1, the UN has said.

The greater Idlib region, home to some three million people, has since January been administered by Syria's former Al-Qaeda affiliate Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, but other jihadist and rebel groups are also present in the area.

The area includes most of Idlib province as well as parts of neighbouring Hama, Aleppo and Latakia.

Endless rounds of U.N.-led peace talks have failed to stem the bloodshed in Syria.

U.N. peace envoy Geir Pedersen, however, is pushing ahead with a 17-month-old effort to form a committee to write a postwar constitution.

The conflict in Syria has killed more than 560,000 people and displaced 6.5 millions since the revolution erupted in 2011 with the brutal repression of protests against Bashar al-Assad.
