Brother of army abductee asks prisoner swap with rebels: document

Zaman al-Wasl has obtained a beseech request by a brother of an army soldier held by armed factions where he asks the regime's Minister of Reconciliation to broker a prisoner swap deal with the rebel group (its name not specified in the document) that demands the release of 14 detainees, including 7 Iraqis, instead.

The document issued by Nidhal Aqel Wannous, who works as an operator in the Syrian Presidency in the Rawdha Palace.

His brother Mohammed Aqel Wanous was kidnapped 4 years ago during his service in the 18 Division in the Syrian Desert in central Homs province. Another army serviceman was kidnapped and had been mentioned in the request.

Wannous did not mention the name of the armed group that kidnapped his brother or whom contacted him and gave the list of rebel fighters held by the regime to be included the swap deal.

No exact figure for the army's abductees by opposition factions or militant groups but the number of civilians and rebel fighters held by the regime is over 250,000.

Rebels and jihadists have killed more than 130,000 pro-regime forces since the armed conflict erupted eight years ago with the brutal repression of protests against Bashar al-Assad, according to local monitoring groups.

The conflict in Syria has also killed more than 560,000 people and displaced 6.5 millions.
