Syrian state-run media says Israel struck the strategic al-Harra hilltops at the edge of the Israeli-Occupied Golan Heights in southern Syria.
Israel hit a strategic area in southern Syria where Western intelligence sources previously said Iranian-backed militias are known to be based, Syrian news agency SANA reported overnight Tuesday.
The newsflash on state-owned Ikhbariyah did not give details but said the strike was on Tal al-Harra, which has long been an outpost for Russian forces but was later taken by Iranian-backed militias, according to Western intelligence sources.
Tal al-Harra is a strategically located area in southern Daraa province. It was for many years a major Russian military radar outpost until rebels took it over in 2014 before it was again recaptured by the Syrian army last year.
According to Syrian media outlet Quneitra Today, at least two Syrian soldiers were wounded and evacuated to the hospital in Damascus.
Social media pages affiliated with the Assad regime are sharing posts saying that Syrian air defenses intercepted the missiles.
Sources affiliated with the Syrian regime said that around 12:40 A.M. explosions were heard over the Mount Hermon area.
Around 1:35 A.M. the attack on Tel Haraa was resumed, targeting posts and bases of the Syrian army, Quneitra Today reported, adding that Syrian air defense systems confronted the attack on the outskirts of Damascus and the Quneitra province.
At the beginning of July, sixteen people including a baby were killed and 21 were wounded by an Israeli attack on multiple Syrian and Iranian targets on the outskirts of Damascus and Homs, Syrian state-run al-Ikhbariya broadcaster reported. The targets were Iranian arms supplies for Hezbollah.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 16 people were killed, among them three children and ten Iranian militias and Hezbollah members. The observatory added that the Israeli Navy also took part in the strike, targeting ten Hezbollah bases, including compounds that were used by Iran's Revolutionary Guards. (Zaman Al Wasl, Agencies)
