41 troops from coastal region killed in July

(Zaman Al Wasl)- At least 41 troops from the coastal region killed in July as regime forces and allied militias wage major offensive to recapture northwestern Syria, pro-regime activists said.

The death toll included 21 troops from Tartus province and 20 more from Latakia, the main stronghold for Bashar al-Assad's manpower.

At least 16 army officers were among the deaths, 4 from Tartus and 12 from Latakia.

Most slain troops were killed in the northern countryside of Hama province by the Jihadist Tahrir al-Sham group and allied rebels.

Since the beginning of northwest Syria offensive late April, regime airstrikes have killed more than 800 civilians and displaced more than 440,000.

Ongoing shelling and airstrikes included the use of indiscriminate weapons, such as barrel bombs.

Rebels and jihadists have killed more than 130,000 pro-regime forces since the armed conflict erupted eight years ago with the brutal repression of protests against Bashar al-Assad, according to local monitoring groups.

The conflict in Syria has also killed more than 560,000 people and displaced 6.5 millions.
