Militant Tahrir al-Sham justifies activist execution, says he killed two jihadists

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham said the execution of media activist Samer al-Salloum last Tuesday was due to his involvement in killing two jihadists as well as the cooperation with the US-backed Syrian Democratic forces, the group's media office told Zaman al-Wasl Thursday.

Journalist Mohamed al-Salloum says his brother was a victim of the arbitrary arrest by Tahrir al-Sham over his critics to its mounting abuses.

Al-Salloum, 34, had been executed by a gunshot in his detention center in April, the Syrian Network for Human Rights said.

The local activist was arrested on December 26, 2017, by the former Syrian offshoot of al-Qaeda from his place of residence in Kafranbel town and taken to al-Uqab Prison in the southern suburbs of Idlib province, according to the Syrian Network.

Tharir al-Sham says al-Salloum had admitted of being a member of an assassinations cell that killed two Tahrir al-Sham fighters.

Al-Salloum was the printing and distribution officer at al-Gherbal Magazine and Zawraq Children Magazine in Kafranbel.

Formerly-known as Jabhat al-Nusra, the group has detained and killed most of its opponents including citizen journalists and human rights advocates.

Zaman al-Wasl reporter in rebel-held areas in Aleppo province was detained for a week by Tahrir al-Sham in July.

Raed al-Fares and Hamoud Junaid, two pro-democracy Syrian activists and citizen journalists, were shot dead by Tahrir al-Sham last November in Kafranbel.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), since May 2018, Tahrir al-Sham has detained at least two journalists in northwestern Syria.

Like the Islamic State, Tahrir al-Sham wants to create an Islamic state of its own. This ambition makes the whole region under its control in northwestern Syria a fertile ground for mounting violations and abuses.
