The sprawling camp in northern Hasaka province was opened in December 2018 to host people living in the Islamic Sate's territory taken over by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

According to the Middle East Eye, thirty-five organisations, including UN agencies and the International Committee of the Red Cross, provide humanitarian assistance to residents, an estimated two-thirds of whom are children.

Eight years of war in Syria have killed 560,000 people and driven half the pre-war population of 22 million from their homes, including more than 6 million as refugees to neighbouring countries.
