A woman was killed in a vehicle collision on a U.S. highway last week just moments after she posted selfies and a “Happy” status update on her Facebook page, U.S. media quoted police as saying.
While driving to work along Interstate 85 in North Carolina Thursday morning, 32-year-old Courtney Sanford’s car crossed the central reservation, crashed into a recycling truck and burst into flames, forcing the other vehicle off the road, investigators said, according Fox-affiliated WGHP TV.
Moments before the head-on collision, investigator said Sanford had posted a Facebook status update saying: “The happy song makes me HAPPY.”
The North Carolina resident had apparently been referring to the hit song by musician Pharrell Williams.
“The Facebook text happened at 8:33 a.m. We got the call on the wreck at 8:34 a.m.,” High Point Police Department spokesperson Lt Chris Weisner told Fox-affiliated WGHP TV station Friday.
“In a matter of seconds, a life was over just so she could notify some friends that she was happy,” Weisner told the station.
Investigators later discovered Sanford had also been posting selfies as she drove down the road, the station said.
“As sad as it is, it is a grim reminder for everyone … you just have to pay attention while you are in the car,” Weisner told WGHP TV.
