(Zaman Al Wasl)- Director and the former Speaker of the Syrian People's Assembly, Najdah Ismail Anzour, has attributed the sectarian tone in his film "The Blood of Palm" to pure chance.
His justification was that the actor who played the role of a cowardly soldier was by chance from As-Suwayda, and was allowed to speak in his original tone. This alleged game of chance has led to another sectarian “coincidence” where the brave soldier in the same film speaks in a coastal accent.
Theatres in the southern province of Sweida have stopped screening the film after the general outrage that reached the point of shooting at the branch of the Ba’ath Party in the city. The unmistakable sectarian inference has gained additional momentum as the film premiered with the presence and patronage of Bashar al-Assad and his wife.
The film’s sectarian character was very implicit in the way it wanted to punish the Druze people of Syria for refusing to send their children to the army, by showing them as cowards, and by rewarding members of the Alawite, showing them as brave.
Assad’s regime did not stop at transferring an army of ISIS members from southern Damascus to the desert of Sweida, causing a massacre that killed more than 250 people on July 25, 2018. The people are punished at the hands of not only war, but also art. That is the penalty for refusing to join the Minority Pact.
