(Zaman Al Wasl)- Head of the Syrian Exporters Federation Mohamed al-Sawwah has been arrested by the Syrian regime over corruption claims, pro-government media outlets reported Saturday.
The arrest followed a campaign by the regime's first lady Asma al-Assad, who vowed to track corrupt businessmen and warlords, according to Zaman al-Wasl sources.
In August, reports said that Rami Makhlouf, Assad’s first cousin and who owns many of Syria’s biggest businesses, was under house arrest.
The campaign launched after the dramatic collapse of the Syrian pound in the last few weeks.
Last week, Syria's cabinet endorsed steps to clamp down on illegal trading of foreign currencies, according to the pro-Damascus daily Al-Watan.
