Syria regime accuses U.S.-backed forces of abducting young men for conscription

The U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are kidnapping young men for forceful recruitment in northeastern Syria, the state-run news agency SANA reported on Saturday.

Through its checkpoint, the Kurdish-led SDF kidnapped 23 people to make them fight in its ranks, said the report, adding that the SDF fighters are also raiding homes and taking young men for the same reason.

Meanwhile, SANA said the SDF fighters have also displaced tens of families from the city of Hasakah in northeastern Syria under false pretexts.

The official news agency said the practices of the SDF in areas they control in northeastern Syria have pushed people to the edge, with protests erupting in several areas against the SDF.

According to the CNN, the SDF consists of about 35,000 personnel, including Kurdish and Arab fighters. Backed by thousands of US airstrikes and military advisers, the group played the lead role in driving ISIS from cities and towns across Syria, a campaign that saw ISIS lose its last territorial holdings in October 2017.

The eight-year-old war has claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands and forced 13 million people from their homes, half of whom have left their shattered homeland.
