Latakia: Regime buries 6 offices killed by rebels

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Six army officers were buried on Saturday in coastal Latakia province following a surprise advance by rebels in Mount Turkmen, pro-regime news feeds reported.

Among the slain forces was Colonel Wael Mahmoud Fadhel famed for his brutality and committing war crimes against the armed opposition in Latakia.

Rebels on Friday took four hilltops from regime army and allied Shiite militias in the coastal province.

The attack near the Kabana hilltops in Mount Turkman came after a week of scattered clashes as regime has been mobilizing troops in the southern countryside of Idlib, seeking to take the last rebel stronghold near coastal Latakia province.

Rebels and jihadists have killed more than 130,000 pro-regime forces since the armed conflict erupted eight years ago with the brutal repression of protests against Bashar al-Assad, according to local monitoring groups.

Eight years of war in Syria have killed 560,000 people and driven half the pre-war population of 22 million from their homes, including more than 6 million as refugees to neighbouring countries.
