Syrian National Army establishes military courts in Northern Syria

(Zaman Al Wasl)- With the extension of its areas of control from Tal Abyad to Ras al-Ain, the Turkish-backed Syria National Army sought to establish judicial institutions to control the security and adjudicate on military cases, establishing two courts for military individuals in both cities.

This extends the jurisdiction of the military judiciary to all liberated areas under the control of the National Army in Euphrates Shield, Olive Branch and Peace Spring.

The Director of the Military Justice Department, Brigadier Arafat Al-Hamoud, told Zaman Al-Wasl that the aim of establishing these two tribunals is to limit violations committed by the National Army, and to provide a judicial authority to adjudicate on these matters.

"This step is very important because there are many complaints and abuses attributed to the National Army, to hold these elements accountable in the case of evidence of their abuses and to redress in the case of wrongful complaints."

In turn, the Secretary-General of the Syrian Justice Association and the judicial inspection official, Dr. Mohammed Nour Hamidi, said that the presence of a military judiciary in Tal Abyad and Ras Al-Ain would reduce the abuses with the risk of punishment.

The Ministry of Defense of the Interim Government announced the establishment of the Military Justice in the Euphrates Shield in February 2018 with the aim of imposing the rule of law on the liberated northern regions and contributing to security, reducing the spread of crime and adjudicating contentious issues among Factions.
