(Zaman Al Wasl)- A study by Syrian researcher revealed that the marketing of hate speech through Social Media is as important as marketing any product and its impact may be stronger because the speech is faster to spread and become politicized, generating a systematic hate speech against the other with horrific effects.
Heba Ezz El-Din completed a study entitled "Hate Speech and its Role in the Ongoing Violence in Syria". It was based on a survey of 55 questions and included opposition-held areas, regime-held areas, areas controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Syrians in neighboring countries and in Europe.
The activist added that the amount of verbal violence and hate that we see on television, radio, newspapers, magazines and Social Media has reached a criminal level.
Her study was based on a 55-question survey distributed to 164 people in different areas, in addition to three focused sessions where she met activists and academics on human rights and digital security. The age groups ranged from 18 to 70, targeting jurists, academics, feminist activists, students, and research centers.
Ezz El-Deen confirmed that the regime’s official television promotes the most hate speech, after it the opposition Orient TV. AS for newspapers , Tishreen newspaper used the most hateful phrases. Radio was the least popular medium for hate speech in the three sectors of the regime, the opposition and the Kurds.
Ezz El-Deen pointed out that she asked if they thought women are more likely to experience hate speech; 53% answered yes while 46% said no.
