Latakia: Liberation Front thwarts new attack on Kabana Hilltops

(Zaman Al Wasl)- The National Liberation Front has thwarted a new incursion attempt by Syria regime forces and allied Shiiite militias in coastal Latakia province Friday, killing 10 troops and wounding 12, field sources told Zaman al-Wasl.

The strategic mountainous area has been under major attack by Assad forces over the past few weeks. So far, rebels have killed at least 40 troops.

Assad forces seek to uproot the Turkish-backed rebels from their last stronghold in the coastal region.

On Wednesday, 14 fighters loyal to Assad, including 7 Hezbollah militants, were killed in Kaban hilltops.

Rebels and jihadists have killed more than 130,000 pro-regime forces since the armed conflict erupted eight years ago with the brutal repression of protests against Bashar al-Assad, according to local monitoring groups.

Eight years of war in Syria have killed 560,000 people and driven half the pre-war population of 22 million from their homes, including more than 6 million as refugees to neighbouring countries.
