Land mines kill 12 pro-Iran militants near Palmyra
(Zaman Al Wasl)- At least 12 pro-Iran militants were killed and 10 more wounded in a land mine explosion near the ancient city of Palmyra in the Syrian desert, local news site reported.

Tadmur (Palmyra) Network said the militants were operating in the Iranian Hajj Kamal militia.

Iran has been building new military bases in eastern Syria to receive mounting numbers of recruits, mostly locals.

Syria’s warring parties have all planted land mines in urban as well as rural areas since the conflict started in 2011.

Across the country, more than 10 million people live in areas contaminated by explosive hazards, the United Nations says.

The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) says land mine contamination “hampers” attempts to clear rubble and cultivate agricultural land.

More than 130,000 pro-regime forces since the armed conflict erupted eight years ago with the brutal repression of protests against Bashar al-Assad.
