Leishmaniasis spreads in Deir Ezzor, 7000 cases reported

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Leishmaniasis disease has swept the eastern province of Deir Ezzor as reports confirm 7000 cases among children, local news site said Tuesday.

Furat Post (Euphrates Post) said the ‘intracellular protozoan parasite’ has spread in the eastern countryside of the oil-rich province due to mounting poverty and lack of aid.

Local governing councils are not able to defeat the disease due to the lack vaccines and medicine.

The health sector called on the World Health Organization (WHO) to provide hospitals and clinics with the vaccine.

Leishmaniasis can present in three main ways: cutaneous, mucocutaneous, or visceral leishmaniasis.
