Aleppo: volunteer campaign to provide teaching aid and equipment

(Zaman Al Wasl)- For two weeks, the northern city of Atareb has held a volunteer campaign by the “Volunteer to Build” team, to support teachers and provide them with teaching aid and equipment, in the absence of governmental support.

Teacher Bahija Akoush, coordinator of the Volunteer to Build team, said that the campaign, which started on November 20, and continues until December 20, targets 9 schools in Atareb in camps surrounding it in the western Aleppo countryside and, include 165 teachers and administrators, and during which a laptop bag containing essential and diverse teaching aids will be distributed.

“The team visited four elementary schools as well as a secondary school, where the staff were given bags containing a semester’s worth of teacher supplies in recognition of their efforts. In addition, 15 employees received cash envelopes as a form of assistance to cope with the harsh living conditions.”

The campaign included awareness sessions on hygiene and its importance, as well as the distribution of brochures to students to introduce them to a pro-volunteering culture.

According to a report by the Syria's Response Coordination Group, there are around 348 schools in the western and northern areas of Aleppo under the supervision of the Directorate of Education in Aleppo. In September, international donor organizations announced the suspension of financial support for education in northern Syria, after the Salvation Government took over a number of areas in rural Aleppo.

Since the start of the current academic year 2019-2020, the salaries of 3,500 teachers have been suspended by support organizations in 275 schools, which hold around 90,000 students.
