Assad appoints new police commander to end tension in Hama

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Bashar al-Assad on Thursday has appointed new police commander for Hama province after deadly clashes between security forces and pro-regime militia in the town of Salhab, local media outlets reported.

Maj. Gen. Jassim al-Hamad, former director of the prison department in the Interior Ministry has replaced Maj. Gen. Khaled Hilal.

Hilal’s fate is still unknown whether he was dismissed or transferred to another post.

The infighting broke out when Fater Hassan, one of ‘Shabiha’ commanders killed the head of Salhab’s police station, Captain Muhannad Ali Wassouf last week.

In retaliation, the head of the criminal security branch in Hama Colonel Akram Naifa launched a raid on Salhab to arrest Hassan but it was confronted with heavy weapons, leaving four militants dead.

Pro-regime news feeds reported that Hassan had been arrested in Atharyya town.
