(Zaman Al Wasl)- Qassem Soleimani’s last mission in Syria was a visit to a military base in the southern countryside of Aleppo where hundreds of Shiite militias had been dispatched, a Republican Guard officer told Zaman al-Wasl Friday.
The head of Iran's elite Quds Force, visited the camp on Wednesday along with top Hezbollah commanders.
Soleimani was killed in a U.S. airstrike near Baghdad's airport midnight along with top Shiite militants.
The killing of the architect of its interventions across the Middle East marks a major escalation in the standoff between Washington and Iran, which has careened from one crisis to another since President Donald Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal and imposed crippling sanctions.
Last week, the Syrian regime army has sent huge reinforcements to Aleppo province, including elite force of the 4th Armored Division and Shiite fighters, as regime backed by Russia seeks to take last rebel strongholds in northern Syria.
