Assad forces violate ceasefire in Idlib, one person killed

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrain regime forces pounded the Maaret al-Numan region in northern Syria with heavy artillery on Monday in violation to a ceasefire agreed between Russian and Turkey on Friday.

Local activists said one person was killed in the town of al-Dana due to the regime’s bombardment.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Defence Ministry said in a statement that civilians could leave what it calls a de-escalation zone in Idlib Province via three new checkpoints.

The ministry said it had received many requests from Syrian civilians in Idlib in areas controlled by armed groups to return to their homes in territory controlled by regime forces.

The Russian military warned armed groups to allow people to leave Idlib if they wanted to.

On Friday, Turkey’s National Defense Ministry announced that Turkey and Russia have agreed on the implementation of the cease-fire within the Idlib de-escalation zone, stopping the air and ground attacks, preventing loss of life and new migratory flows to contribute to the normalization of life.

Over 1 million Syrians have moved near the Turkish border due to intense attacks over the last year.

According to the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, the Idlib province is home to around 3 million civilians, 75% of them women and children.

The conflict in Syria has also killed more than 560,000 people and displaced 6.5 millions.
