Rebels kill two army officers in Daraa

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Two Lieutenant Colonels and a soldier were killed Thursday when an armed group ambushed them in southern Daraa province, such an attack follows a series of attacks against the regime army and allied militias after two years of calm.

The ambush took place in the village of Nahj in the western countryside of Daraa, according to Zaman al-Wasl reporter.

Rebels and jihadists have killed more than 135,000 pro-regime forces since the armed conflict erupted eight years ago with the brutal repression of protests against the Assad regime, according to local monitoring groups.

Five days ago, a group of armed factions stormed military checkpoints in the town of Sheikh Saad in the western countryside and in the town of Nahta and al-Karak al-Sharqi in the eastern countryside near the Jordanian border.

Local activists said the move by the armed groups followed residents’ demand to release of their relatives held by the regime forces for years.

The frustration is mounting with regards to the regime’s security policies of arbitrary arrest and isolating the towns with military barriers.

The conflict in Syria has also killed more than 560,000 people and displaced 6.5 millions.
