Syrian gold workshops halt working due to currency crisis

Chairman of Syria's goldsmith society and Jewelry said most of the gold workshops had stopped working what pushed jewellery shops owners to display used gold in their windows.

Ghassan Jazmati told to regime-run Al-Watan newspaper the gold markets are experiencing stagnation in the trade due to the uncertainty and anticipation for prices to be fixed at a certain rate, so not to be susceptible to loss due to its current fluctuations.

Jazamati said the majority of the gold workshops in Damascus have stopped working due to the lack of demand from jewelry shops.

With the Syrian pound continuous plummeting, the price of gold has recently reached historical levels at 46 thousand SYP per 21-carat gram.
