Kurdish PYD says displaced people behind Raqqa's bread crisis

(Zaman Al Wasl)- The self-governing Kurdish Democratic Union Party has deprived the displaced from Hama and Homs of bread in Raqqa province, holding the continued displacement responsible for the bread crisis.
Nayef Saleh, who was displaced from the Al-Sukhna town east of Homs, says that many of the displaced from Hama and Homs are settled in Al-Sahl near the city of Raqqa, where bakery owners claim that they do not have enough bread for all of them.

In fact, Nayef pays 2,000 SYP a day to provide his family with pita bread, which costs four times the price of ordinary “subsidized” bread, while the residents receive a pack of eight loaves at a price of 125 SYP.

The man has tried to obtain bread directly through connections and after standing for hours since dawn, he is given 200 SYP worth of bread when he needs 5 packs at approximately 500 SYP, sometimes even going back home empty-handed.

The owner of one of the pita bread bakeries collected their family cards in order to convert his license to subsidized bread, so that the Old Al-Sahel bakery continues distributing bread to the residents of the village, while the new bakery does so for the displaced. However, after a short period, that too stopped on the pretext of lack of provisions.

Officials of the local councils and the municipalities of the Autonomous Administration say that some organizations distribute free bread to the displaced; however, the displaced just want to be treated like the locals.

The Municipality of Raqqa justified the congestion by the increasing population and the displacement of hundreds of the people from Tal Abyad to Raqqa, stating that when they have a final census they will be increasing the quantities of flour accordingly.

Last week, a woman died in Raqqa after standing in the queue for too long in subzero temperatures.
