(Zaman Al Wasl)- War and displacement did not stop Syrian student, Anwar Al-Arfy, from realizing her dream and achieving success. After years of hard work and determination, Anwar ranked first in the Department of Journalism at the University of Yarmouk, graduating with honors.
At the start of the war and under siege and bombing, Al-Arfy originally from Baba Amr neighbourhood in central Homs city, taught children who dropped out of schools to read and write. As the conditions deteriorated, she was forced to leave Homs and seek refuge in Jordan with her seven siblings. She was, however, unable to obtain her identification documents in order to complete her university studies. She has spent a whole week on the Syrian-Jordanian border before she was able to enter Zaatari camp, later leaving it to live in the city of Mafraq.
After the death of her mother and after her father had to move to Azaz, in Aleppo countryside, Anwar had to support her seven siblings alone, playing both roles to educate and take care of them with her older sister. Both had to give private lessons in order to support the family.
Anwar faced many difficulties at university, the first of which was the entirely different curricula. Eventually, she was able to overcome all obstacles with hard work and thorough research.
"From an early age I had a passion and interest in journalism, to report the news and struggles of the Syrians,"Al-Arfy says.
This desire grew with the revolution and the war, which encouraged her to reconsider journalism, especially with the lack of journalists, and the need to broadcast the reality of the besieged neighborhoods.
During her studies, Anwar has written reports, news and other pieces on the situation of Syrians in Jordan, setting up a blog on the issue. For her graduation project, she built a website and prepared 35 journalistic articles, including an investigation on Syrian refugee. The project won the admiration of the doctors of the department, so she was ranked first with a score of 89%.
