FSA nominates Gen. Shlal to head Defence Ministry after Mustafa

Supreme Military council of rebel Free Syrian Army has nominated Gen. Abdul Aziz Shlal to head Defence Ministry in the opposition government, source told Zaman Alwasl.

The general commission of National Coalition will vote on the nomination in the upcoming meeting.

The strong-willed Shlal can bridge the gap between Western–backed opposition and armed opposition, analyst said.

Al Shlal, a former head of Syrian military police before his defection in 2012, will be first military man to head the ministry.

Three weeks ago, Asaad Mustafa stepped down from his post as Defence Minister for the second time, complaining that rebels were being prevented from obtaining “legitimate means of defense” against the firepower wielded by regime forces and their allies, according to The Daily Star.
