Daraa: rebels seize strategic hill, kill dozens

(Zaman Alwasl)- In a statement posted Online, rebels of the Southern Front claimed taking full control of strategic hill in Daraa province, leaving dozens dead.

Activists said nearly 100 soldiers of forces loyal to Bashar al-Assad have been killed and 50 of others held captive after storming the impregnable stronghold of Tal al-Jumoua'.

The statement said 23 rebel factions have participated in the offensive.

Three months ago, rebels fighting to topple Assad established the Southern Front, which includes some 30,000 fighters from more than 55 mainstream opposition groups operating from the Jordanian border to the outskirts of Damascus and the Golan Heights.

The alliance is in part aimed at alleviating Western concerns that providing greater aid to the fractious rebels would bolster al-Qaeda groups and see heavy weapons fall into the hands of extremists.

Syria's conflict, now in its fourth year, has killed more than 162,000 people, a third of them civilians, and caused millions to flee.
