Turkish commandos kill 8 Kurdish fighters: Defense Ministry

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Turkish commandos has killed 8 Kurdish militants were trying to infiltrate the ‘Operation Peace Spring zone in northeastern Syria, the Defense Ministry said Tuesday.

The escalation followed a week of skirmishes between the YPG-led forces and Turkish-backed Syrian National Army near Ras al-Ayn region.

The Turkish artillery early Tuesday has hit pockets of YPG fighters near Abu Rasayn area.

In retaliation, the Kurdish militants have launched a surprise attack on the Nation army posts near Tel Tamr. Five SNA fighters have been taken captive by the YPG.

The Turkish military and the Syrian National Army attacked Kurdish forces in northeastern Syria on October 9 with the aim of creating a roughly 30-kilometer (20-mile) deep buffer zone.

Kurdish forces agreed to withdraw from a 120-kilometer (75 mile) long, Arab-majority segment of the 440-kilometer (275-mile) border zone, although clashes have been reported since.

Turkey subsequently reached a deal with the Syrian regime's main backer Russia for Kurdish forces to pull back from the entire border area.
