Three senior directors in mobile networks resign as owner's discord mounts with Assad

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syria’s largest and only mobile network operators, MTN and Syriatel announced the resignation of three of their top managers, without revealing any reasons for the decision.

In a disclosure statement addressed to the Syrian Commission on Financial Markets and Securities on Sunday, MTN said that Chairman of Board Dr. Muhammad Bashir Al-Munajjid, Dr. Naseer Shabah and George Fakiani have formally submitted their resignation letters for “personal circumstances and reasons.”

The resignation came after the aggravation of the dispute between Syriatel’s owner and Rami Makhlouf and his cousin Bashar al-Assad.

The discord mounted after the Syrian government demanded both Syriatel and MTN pay around $200 million in taxes in no more than a week (the deadline has already passed seven days ago).

Rami Makhlouf’s public appearance in two Facebook videos to talk openly about his spat with the regime provided fertile grounds for the media and the public. But with the lack of details on this dispute and its implications, no one is able to speculate on the extent of its consequences and the impact of such a rift within Assad’s regime on its already weakened structure.

Makhlouf said that regime security has been tracking and arresting his staff in Syriatel despite all services and merites he provides to the state intelligence in the nine-year-old war.
