268,000 displaced returned back home in Idlib since March 6: monitor

(Zaman Al Wasl)- About 268,000 displaced people have returned to their homes in northern Idlib province since a Russian-brokered ceasefire reached on March 6, Syria’s Response Coordination Group said
Friday.

The local monitoring group has warned that constant ceasefire violations will endanger the lives of civilians and push for a new displacement wave in the region that hosts 3.5 million civilians, according to the United Nations.

Idlib has long been under siege by bashar al-Assad forces and Iran proxies, and most of previous cease-fires were plagued by violations.

Since April 2018, attacks on the last opposition stronghold have dramatically intensified and caused new waves of refugees to move toward the Turkish border, putting the country, which already hosts 3.7 million Syrians, into a difficult position.

As a result, Turkey, which has the second-largest army in the transatlantic NATO alliance, has funneled troops and equipment into the region to stop the Syrian regime's advance and to avoid a fresh wave of refugees, Anadolu agency said.

The nine-year-old conflict has killed more than 400,000 people and displaced 7 millions.
