Russia exhumed bodies of Uzbek and Chechen jihadists in Aleppo: source

(Zaman Al Wasl)- The Russian military police have exhumed 14 bodies for ISIS jihadists, mostly from Uzbekistan and Chechnya, who purportedly killed by opposition forces in northern Aleppo province years ago, military source told Zaman al-Wasl Friday.

The jihadists were members of the Islamic State group (Daesh) who were killed in 2014 by opposition forces and buried in a cemetery in Andan town that includs 2000 graves for local and foregin fighters.

The recovered bodies are expected to undergo DNA tests.

According to the Atlantic Council, Chechen and North Caucasian militants began arriving in Syria at roughly the same time as other foreign fighters. As the conflict intensified in mid-2012, shifting to conventional warfare between regime and rebel forces, so too did the strength of radical groups and the appeal of Syria as the new frontline of jihad.

Beginning in 2013, the Russian security services began aiding and abetting the outflow of militants from the North Caucasus towards Syria and Iraq while Chechen authorities, fearful of the consequences of exporting such fighters, prevented such activities in Chechnya.
