Syrians who seek Turkish citizenship complain bureaucracy

(Eqtsad)- Some Syrian candidates for Turkish citizenship have launched an online campaign all over social media, demanding to Turkish authorities to hasten the citizenship process as they have been waiting for years for the final answer of whether their candidacy would be accepted or denied.

Mohamed al-Idlibi, one of the campaign admins, called on the Turkish authorities to reconsider all unsettled naturalization files, stressing that he is still stuck in the fourth security phase of the whole process, since 2018.

Most of the citizenship seekers have gone through economic, social and psychological hardships in Turkey which the largest host country of registered refugees with over 3.5 million Syrian refugees.

Al-Idlibi said that he had lost his job due to problems related to personal documents and travel documents, noting also that many active organizations in Turkey refused to employ him because of this particular citizenship issue, despite his long and rich work experience in international organizations. Corruption in the Turkish Ministry of Interior is said to be the main cause for the obstruction of the citizenship files.

The Turkish Interior Ministry suspended thousands of pending requests In 2019 and kept another section of them, without providing any explanations about the reasons behind this decision.

A previous statement by the Turkish Interior Minister, Suleiman Soylu, said that the total number of Syrians who were granted Turkish citizenship amounted to 92,280 people.

Abdullah Hassan, another candidate, said obtaining Turkish citizenship will facilitate many matters for the Syrians in Turkey, like the possession of Real estate, along with movement restrictions inside and outside Turkey.

There is a deliberate negligence of Turkish employees in their handling of files, Hassan said, adding he has been waiting for over a year and the situation remains the same.
