Idlib: SAMS builds hospital for coronavirus patients

(Zaman Al Wasl)- The Syrian-American Medical Association (SAMS) has built a new hospital for patients infected with coronavirus in northern Idlib province, local activists said.

Ibrahim Abboud, The hospital director, said the hospital is a precautionary step to contain the Covid-19 patients in northern Syria.

Abboud said the hospital is equipped with latest modern technology and new equipment, pointing out that its preparation took a period of 2 months.

The preparation process consisted in rehabilitating the Agricultural Specialized Hospital in Idlib, under the supervision of SAMS and World Health Organization, in order to turn it into a suitable center in terms of technology and medical devices. There was also a particular focus on providing protection equipment and safety measures for the medical staff.

The hospital includes an intensive care department for high-risk cases, a department for medium cases, a discharge lounge for patients who stop needing heavy hospitalization, a laboratory and a radiology department. The intensive and medium care sections contain ten beds each, and five are placed in the discharge department. The hospital is equally equipped with two dialysis machines to treat the infected people suffering from kidney failure and acute kidney complications. The hospital is also designed to protect its staff from a possible infection and provide all their medical supplies.

While the hospital can only hold a certain number of patients, there is a plan to expand  its containing capacity.  The staff is described as highly efficient since they have taken special courses and training under the supervision of SAMS and the World Health Organization. “In the end” Abboud adds, “we, at the Agriculture Hospital, send a message of thanks and appreciation to the National Hospital for their logistical support of devices and equipment.

About 1117 tests were conducted for suspected cases as of June 12, according to the Ministry of Health of the Syrian interim government. There is, however, no record of any infected case whether in the Idlib governorate or the Olive branch or Euphrates Shield areas and even areas east of the Euphrates controlled by the resistance factions. About 1117 tests were conducted for suspected cases as of June 12, according to the Ministry of Health of the Syrian interim government.
