(Zaman Al Wasl)- About 50 prisoners from southern Daraa province were released due to a special amnesty by Bashar al-Assad, a local rights group said Friday.
Assad's move came to ease tensions amid a hike in skirmishes over past months in the cradle of the Syrian revolution.
Daraa Center for Martyrs Documentation said most of the freed prisoners were arbitrarily arrested and the rest were held over civil crimes.
Syrian opposition says more than 500,000 prisoners are still inside the prisons of the Syrian regime.
