Assad Arrests Newly-Sacked Prime Minister Over Corruption Claims: Source

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syria's Bashar al-Assad has arrested Imad Khamis, a newly-sacked prime minister, over corruption claims, a well-informed source told Zaman al-Wasl Friday.

Khamis has been held in a prison run by the repubican Guard near Assad's palace where he is undergoing an interrogation by the anti-corruption committee led by Assad's wife Asma al-Assad.

The source has also assured that Khamis' health is good, saying he didn't suffer any heart attack symptoms.

Al-Assad sacked Khamis on June 11,  in a sudden dismissal for the PM who had been in power since 2016.

Pro-Assad loyalists said Khamis had failed to revive the collapsing economy and of being a corrupt official.

Assad immediately designated engineer and current water resources minister Hussein Arnous as his replacement, Syrian state media reported.

Khamis has long been a close ally of Assad, previously serving his minister of electricity. In this role he was sanctioned by the European Union for allegedly using power outages to quell anti-government protests.
