Number of Cancer, kidney failure diseases mounts in Damascus

Amid deteriorating economic and health conditions, the Syrian people are not being infected or killed by Covid-19 only, but also by diseases that began to spread rapidly in large numbers, including kidney failure, which is surprisingly spread among young people.

One of the doctors, who preferred to remain anonymous, told Zaman al-Wasl: “Kidney failure is one of the diseases that usually and largely affects the elderly, but we notice its spread in the city and its countryside at rates that did not previously exist.”

In the same vein, a taxi driver said that: “Usually, I take an old woman to an association that sponsors the treatment and it’s cost twice a week, but recently the numbers have increased among children.”

In the western countryside of Damascus, the situation seems different, as the cases of colon diseases increased in several areas, according to Dr. (Most colon diseases are currently caused by water pollution and prolonged water cuts, forcing residents to buy water from vendors of tanks that fill their tanks from invalid wells or polluted waterways.

In Damascus, there are charitable associations such as Syria al-Khair in tNahr Aisha neighborhood and Hefz el nema association, which contributes to medical care as well as food for the sick, which consists of a variety of canned goods, oil and food supplies such as rice, bulgur and lentils.

As for the price of the medicine that is spent on one patient, it amounts to 190,000 Syrian pounds ($371,148) before the recent increases in medicines. Mohammad, who is treating his son at the “Syria al-Khair” association, said: “The pharmacy bill before the last increase in medicine was 190,000 pounds, as the pharmacist who sends it to the association told me, and it is a set of needles and pills given for eight sessions per month.”

Colon and lung cancer is one of the diseases that are widespread in the capital. As for the numbers, there are no accurate official statistics. As for the causes, Dr. A.B. said: “The long war in the country and the amount of weapons and ammunition of all kinds have led to great pollution in the air and soil, and these diseases are spread, especially in Eastern Ghouta and some Areas of Western Ghouta, which witnessed battles and chemical strikes.”

Some citizens in the western countryside accused some parts of racism and only treating people from Damascus.

Fayez, from Eastern Ghouta said: “My father needed an open heart surgery, which is very expensive. We went to an association, and the answer was “we are sorry, you from the countryside, the fund’s money is from the Damascus merchants ’money and is intended exclusively for them.”
