Damascus-held Refugees conference to polish Assad: relief group

The Syrian Response Coordinators Group maintains that the settlement proposed by the Russian-brokered refugee conference in Damascus will not be viable as long as Russian and regime forces are still in control in Syria.

On Tuesday, the Group stated that regime and Russian media propaganda promoting the conference is an attempt to advance the Assad regime internationally, which is not possible presently.

The statement stressed that Russia’s invitation to the conference is a display for it to appear as a humanitarian peace-keeper in the region, a rather failing act that will not produce the result that Russia seeks.

“While Russia calls for more efforts to preserve the alleged peace operations in Syria, Russian warplanes are still striking several areas in Idlib, in addition to continuously facilitating the violation of agreements by regime forces, especially the agreement of ceasefire in northwest Syria on March 5, 2020,” the group said.

According to the Group’s statement, all attempts by Russia to legitimize the Assad regime are absurd and would not gain approval from the international community nor the Syrian people.

The statement categorically refuted the figures of the displaced and returnees announced by Russia, as yet another attempt to buy time and gain international support for repatriation that is already doomed to failure.

So far, there is no desire for any displaced person or refugee to return to regime-controlled areas, due to the lack of basic amenities, the continuing economic collapse and kidnappings, arrests and forced disappearances that make these areas unsafe.

The Group concluded by calling on the international community and the United Nations to fully assume its humanitarian and moral responsibility towards the Syrian file, and to advance the necessary decisions.
