War amputee Mohamed seeks prosthetics to shorten stride to school

Mohamed Nasser Al-Hussein, 16, faces great difficulties in his day-to-day life after losing both his legs in a landmine explosion, which makes it harder for him to get to school in his deserted village in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor.

Al-Hussein said that pushing his wheelchair puts great strain on his arms because of the rocky road and the lack of lanes for disabled people.

Even on the International Day of People with Disabilities, which falls on December 3, the suffering of Mohammad and dozens of people who lost their limbs in mine explosions of mines and remnants of war is Deir Ezzor continues.

After his father was killed by ISIS in 2014, Mohammad the eldest of four siblings became the main breadwinner. However, his disability rendered him unable to help earn money, and the burden has fallen on his younger brother who works in street markets.

After the Islamic State was expelled from the area in 2018, he returned to his uncle’s house to pack some items, however a landmine exploded at the front door and he was rushed to the hospital, where the doctors were forced to amputate his legs to save his life.

His journey back from school takes hours in his wheelchair because of the effort required to push it, with no one around to help. The rainy season will complicate the issue further with mud making it the harder.

PR official at the Shaitat Martyrs' Association said that they are working to secure an electric wheelchair that will facilitate his journey to and from school.

Mohammed’s father had been executed by ISIS, and was one of 26 victims whose remains were transferred last month from the Jumah mass grave to the Abu Hamam cemetery.

The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) do not consider the victims of the 2014 Shaitat massacre as martyrs, so their families do not receive monthly salaries, as is the case for the families of their killed members.
